What is the Best A/V System on the Market?

Posted on: 07-25-2011 in: Blog

Home Theater

We were recently on a project where the homeowner had the electrician take care of the A/V system. This was a good electrician, and he did an admirable job proposing and installing the one system he was familiar with. When he started getting in over his head, he brought us in to help.It very quickly became evident that the system the electrician planned for, was not the best system for the client. When the client asked him why he did not consider other options, he found himself in a very uncomfortable situation. The builder took me aside and asked me “What is the best A/V system on the market?”It can be confusing, as there are a lot of A/V and control systems to choose from: Sonos, Savant, AMX, Control-4, Crestron, Elan, Niles, Nuvo, Speakercraft, Russound, Colorado-VNet, URC , Harmony, HAI, Insteon, Lutron, RTI, etc. Each of these products are great. If you talk to the manufacturer, or believe what they say online, every one of them will meet your needs. However, we have had the opportunity to work with every one of these product lines, and we have discovered that they are not interchangeable, and there is no “One size fits all”.In this case, we were able to remove the system and install a less expensive, more flexible system that the homeowner is thrilled with.We have 13 years of experience using all of the major A/V and control systems on the market. We are constantly having in-house trainings and attending seminars to stay current on all the major technologies. We are fortunate enough to work with very good architects who know that you can’t shoe-horn every customer into the same design. They have a process where they interview the client, introduce them to various concepts and help them determine the best design based on their preferences.A good electronic systems contractor should have a similar process. When you are considering a new system, let us show you what is available so you can see which solution is best for you.

Want to really love your music?

Posted on: 07-15-2011 in: Blog

Try listening to it on a great audio system.

I remember in college I would just sit and listen to one CD after another. Remember being excited to hear a new album? I couldn’t wait to hear each new track. We had a pretty good stereo system, and we listened to music all the time. Of course, the system was just in the living room, so we would crank it up so we could hear it throughout the house.I love music, I listen to it in the bathroom when I get ready in the morning, I listen in the car, on my bike, in the office. It just makes the day feel less serious and more enjoyable. Now that I have “grown-up” my family’s house has an audio system with speakers in every room. We can turn on whatever we want with the touch of a button on a keypad, iPad, iPhone, etc.. It is definitely an upgrade from the college system, and I still use it all the time.I recently set up a high performance audio system in my garage. I spend a fair amount of time out there in my workshop, and we had some gear in the shop that I wanted to listen to.I think I had forgotten how good a high performance audio system could sound. I find myself just sitting out there and listening. I am actually excited to hear the next song. It reminds me of being back in college. I think I feel like the guy in the old Maxell commercial, remember that one… Maxell ad.I can’t tell you how many times I have had clients tell me they do not want a high performance audio systems because “ they cannot tell the difference”. Well I can guarantee you can tell the difference, anyone can. The difference is huge. It is one thing to decide you do not want to spend the money on a performance audio system because you can’t afford it, or you do not like music very much (yes, sadly these people do exist). But please do not deceive yourself. With a high performance audio system you can feel the music. It is not necessarily louder, just more clean, clear, crisp and powerful. It is an experience I had taken for granted for a long time, and now that I have immersed myself in it again, I cannot believe I have missed the music for so long.It is a totally different experience to close your eyes and feel like the artist is sitting right in front of you. It makes it fun to re-discover your music library. Enjoying each song to a degree you forgot was possible. It is an experience I would love to share. Let me know if you are interested.

Video Conferencing Through Your TV

Posted on: 06-23-2011 in: Blog

When video conferencing was introduced in the 80’s it was expensive, the equipment was cumbersome and difficult to come by.  There have been many technical advances over the last 30 odd years and now just about anyone can make video calls with their computer or smart phone.  Video conferencing or telepresence systems now fall into two classes of service; business & personal.

Examples of an individual user are your grandparents video calling you over skype to say hi to the little ones, or the average person using their email or instant messenging client to video call a friend.  Google has recently announced they are developing a skype-like product that will work through the Chrome browser; we have yet to see if it will include video capabilities.  Some of the technical issues with this are latency and jitter, but all in all it’s a cool technology to have on hand.

The business users require more than a point to point connection; often a business video conference (commonly referred to as telepresence) meeting can involve several attendees from multiple locations at once.  While this equipment is far pricier than what the individual pays, the quality is much higher and it helps companies cut travel costs and impress participants and decisions can be made more quickly.  Some personal products also support multi-point video service, the main difference will continue to be the security and quality of the audio/video connection. Cisco, Polycom/IBM, and Skype/Panasonic/LG/Samsung have all come out with products that bring videoconferencing into the living room. Video conferencing is one of the many technologies that brings people together and breaks through barriers and is now available through your home theater system, home office television or any room through a television set.So whether you are interested in a video conferencing system  for business or personal use, we have you covered.

Whole House Audio – It Can Get Even Better

Posted on: 06-15-2011 in: Blog

One of the best and least expensive ways to enhance the ambiance of your home is with music.  Whole-house music systems have speakers in each room so you can have music playing throughout the house.

We have been installing these systems for years and have hundreds of happy customers.Everyone knows they are great for parties, but they are also simple to operate and great for everyday use.Recently a few of our customers have wanted to take it to the next level. By adding a subwoofer to some of the more heavily trafficked areas they have created an amazingly full, rich sound that really makes you feel like the music is all around you.

Achieving really deep bass and reproducing it

in your home audio system

at real-life levels is easy.

The quality with most whole house audio systems (usually a combo of in ceiling and in wall speakers) is good but if you really want that deep base you can feel you will want to add a Subwoofer.  Subwoofers integrate smoothly into the whole house audio systems, increasing (intensifying) the bass without causing peaks or dips.  This way you can listen to your music anywhere you want AND you can also have deep rich bass tones.Subwoofers can be hidden in the ceiling, in the walls, in cabinetry or under furniture. They have very flexible placement options. And, by adding a subwoofer to a room, you can take a nice sound system and make it amazing.Let us know if you have a room or outside area where you would like to augment the sound quality with a subwoofer. You will not be disappointed.SoundVision makes sure every system we install fits in seamlessly with your home’s existing décor. Speakers are placed inconspicuously in ceilings, walls, custom cabinetry or on bookshelves. We even install completely invisible speaker systems for those focused on maintaining existing aesthetics.

Take it from us, adding a subwoofer is an enhancement you won’t want to live without.

How is SoundVision Holding Up in This Tough Economy?

Posted on: 05-19-2011 in: Blog

We have been getting this question daily for the last couple of years. The answer is: Pretty well and here is why: 1)      We buy wellI’ve been in the industry a long time and have created amazing business partnerships along the way.  We have created alliances with the best  manufacturers that allow us to purchase at prices that are significantly lower than most companies of similar size. This allows us to provide our customers with a low price guarantee while still meeting the minimum margins required to run a profitable business. 2)      Low overheadOur office space is relatively low cost, we do not have a huge advertising budget, we own all of our vehicles and equipment, and we have no debt. This means we have very low overhead and we can  expand and contract with the market without having to cover huge expenses. The result is our ability to consistently provide high quality service at reasonable rates. 3)      Exceptional peopleWe cultivate an extremely positive atmosphere; promote training, communication and growth within the company.  We recruit and hire only exceptional staff.   Professionalism and integrity are paramount in everything we do. We believe that top caliber employees can deliver twice as much as an average employee. Therefore we spend a lot of effort finding and developing our staff. The result is a better customer experience and a more efficiently executed project. 4)      Commitment to operational excellenceWe frequently win awards for best practices & constantly implement operational excellence. Our goal is to set the industry standard for high quality installations and a superior customer experience. We have developed a streamlined process that allows us to deliver great results at minimum cost. 5)      Customer referralsWe still credit the bulk of our new business to referrals from our customers. Most Americans hate their media systems, their systems are unattractive, don’t work well and are difficult to operate. We have consistently delivered systems that fit with the homes décor, work well and are easy to operate. If you love your system, please tell your friends about us. Buying power, low overhead, ability to offer best brands at the best prices and incredible service are a few of the reasons we are  still able to offer you great experiences even in a challenging economy.     Well, all that… And the best unpaid sales staff any company could ask for.  Thank you for all of your referrals, we are so thrilled to be able to work with each and every one of you. If you are a customer and love what we’ve done, please share your experience! If you are a customer and have feedback as to how we could have done better, let us know! If you have always wanted rockin’ home theater or house music system but haven’t taken the plunge, click here to get started (your entertainment experience will never be the same)!

Google chases home automation with Android. SoundVision is already there with the iPhone/iPad.

Posted on: 05-11-2011 in: Blog

On Tuesday Google announced their intention to have every appliance in your home as a potential accessory, or network of accessories for your phone. The goal of the Android @ Home framework is to enable your Android device to function as a home automation controller. Their plan is for the phone to be able to connect to wireless lighting products, bulbs and switches, thermostats, washing machines, game consoles, etc. They claim devices that can communicate with Android should all be available in stores by the end of the year.Staying within the spirit of Google’s passion open source software, Google promised “It will be completely open for developers to explore and write their own applications.” In our opinion, creating a device like the android, that can communicate with controllable devices like lighting and thermostats is the easy part. Replacing all the light switches, thermostats, etc. with controllable devices is the larger (and more expensive) task.Google is onto something. As those of us who can control all of these features from our phones have discovered, it is very cool, and very handy. Kudos to Google for bringing more awareness to how amazing home automation can be! Whether or not they are able to deliver on their proposed model remains to be seen. However, if you want to use your iPhone or iPad to control your lights, heat, security, TV, home audio, view cameras, open doors, etc., call us.   SoundVision can deliver all of these features today.

What is the status of 3D TV?

Posted on: 04-22-2011 in: Blog

The industry is very keen on 3D being a total TV revolution. They are hopeful that it will be as big as the HDTV revolution.A recent trade magazine article stated “3D is alive and well…” the author’s reasoning is that although sales are way below targets, the manufacturers are still investing heavily in the technology. In my opinion, hopeful manufacturers does not signify buy in from the market.A few downfalls to 3D are:

  • Glasses are annoying
  • Very little content available
  • Some consumers find 3D nauseating
  • Even on a 65″ TV the screen size is too small for 3D to have a dramatic effect

I have seen the demo broadcasts of sports in 3D and in my opinion, they have a long way to go.However, we are selling a lot of 3D TVs, and here is why: most top models from the major manufacturers are 3D capable. Since many of our customers are interested in the best picture quality, we sell them TVs that include 3D capability. The reality is that only a very small percentage of those customers are buying the 3D glasses and actively seeking out 3D content. In summary, at this point I think 3D is still a novelty, but only time will tell.
